  • Adukes,

Good question - I know what you're asking. I can't for the life of me remember how to check that. :S

    DaV,

Thanks but none of those links helped. As far as I know, there is no-board video.

Am now wondering if my DirectX is current. Will check it out.

  • ADukes,

Roger that. Thanks. Ran it. Am using between 5% and 8% of RAM before SOWGB. Not a lot, I'd say.

  • All,

Just wondering - should this topic be moved to the Technical topic area?

Are you sure that 5-8% is your memeroy usage? That would be ~81MB only.

  • Okay, the Duh factor is huge here sometimes. Will assume we are looking under the "performance" tab - CPU usage - 2-7% average. Page file usage - under 400 MB average. Have 34 processes running. Probably could cut that down somewhat.
Total physical memory - 1047024K. Available - 613572 +/-. Kernal Memory - Total - 123552. Paged - 85280 +/-. Unfortunately, nothing just says RAM usage. Will guess, (again), one of the above counts for RAM in some fashion.

    RAM = random access memory

    1047024kb - 613572kb = 433452kb (~423MB) in use

    What's your Catalyst version?

  • Am aware what RAM means. Thank you for the math conversion, though. Nice to know.

Catalyst version - 6-11-pre-r300_xp2k_ddccc_wdm_38185. In theory, this is the latest version available from ATI.

    Thoughts?

    Jack

BTW - sound just went out in demo. Uninstalled everything, downloaded a new demo and reinstalled. Sound back, still have floating rocks, etc.

Do you have the "use application settings" box checked for AntiAliasing in the Catalyst control center?

  • Mine says "Let the application decide" rather "use application settings", but yes, that is checked.

Oh just saw that it is the same 9250 card than before only with 256MB.

Then I have bad news for you: The 9250 is a DirectX 8.1 card, but the engine requires a DirectX 9 compatible card.

  • Actually that is good news because now I know what to do. There are other ATI cards that will work w/ my machine. It is easy to check if they will run the newer DirectX versions. Back to Dell then Ebay. :)

Time to rock and roll! Thanks.

    Compatible cards should be:
    Radeon 9550 (256MB)
    Radeon 9600 XT (256MB)
    Radeon 9800 Pro (256MB)
    Radeon 9800 XT (256MB)

  • Roger that. Thanks for the info. As an aside, just came off the Dell website - the ad for the ATI 9250 say it supports DirectX 9.0. Interesting.

  • Well, that was to good to be true. Adukes, unfortunately, all those cards are AGP slot types. I need a PCI interface card. Ah, the search is on.

Ouch. I'm not sure but there should be a PCI version of the GeForce FX 5200.

  • The world is your oyster! Virtually all cards made today are for PCI slots. You will need to determine whether you have a PCI, PCI-e or PCI-e 2.0 slot. By the way, your card is DX9 compatible. It just doesn't take advantage of all DX9 features. You might try downloading a DX9 driver for it and try the game out before buying a new card. Just make sure you have the old driver handy in case something goes wrong.

  • Gentlemen,

Thank you for all your information.

Adukes - Yes there are g-force cards available. I was told long ago to steer clear of them as they didn't do well with the TC series. Would they be ok with SOWGB?

Georgia - You are correct. My comps use the old style PCI slots. Checked the box and the card is as you say, DirectX 9 compatable. Supposedly I have directx 10 installed but will try a different download to see if it makes a difference.

The 9250 is not 100% DirectX 9 compliant, because of the limited V1.4 pixel and vertex shaders. That's probably the reason why the game doesn't work.

BTW, DirectX 10 doesn't support XP.

If that's the case ADukes, our game would have problems because I had to write some shaders to get the map splatting working.

  • Brothers,

I will be swallowing my pride and heading off to my 2 local independent Comp shops where people I trust work. They can hook me up with the correct card and I'll pay the price. Got to get this game going and stop pretending I know more than I do. LOL! Thanks for the help.

  • TA-DA!!!!! It works. Picked up a ATI Radeon HD 2400PRO vid card. Slapped it in and BINGO! Ground, dirt, roads, etc. All there. Now, just have to scrape up the money for the game...LOL. BTW, vid card was on sale. That was cool.
