Still no word on steam, it's conciderd the death of any pc only game to not be on steam, beeing on steam gives you hundreds or even thousands of "free" sales. They simply browse steam, and oh that looks cool and buy it, if it's not on steam they will never hear or see anything about the game.

The second category are those that want to buy the game, but refuse to buy any game not avalable on steam.

The game is comming out in 13 days, if you are going to release it on steam, make the store page NOW so it's for atleast a week before it goes on sale.

Also this would be a great time to release the old Scourge of war titles on steam, Make a store page, release SOW:G and the expantion packs, they are all great games, that the VAST majority of gamers have not heard about.

Slitherine/Matrix have other games on steam, so it's not like they have a non steam policy.

I do not believe it will be released on steam for a while, I'm pretty sure it will be matrix only for a spell.

If that is the case it may be better to wait for both steam, realism mods and unfinished features to be added. Such as the cavalry features not in this version mitre was talking about.

Steam is a games client that auto updates your games and contains all your friends.
it is the primary way for pc gamers to come together, create groups and clubs and makes it easy to join each others games, buy and gift games to each other and shows everybody what you are playing when you are in game. I often get messages on steam from friends who see me playing a game and want to join or talk to ne about the game.
I often see steam popup telling me a friend is playing x game and i simply click on the drop down to watch his game or go to the store page to find out about it. You don't have to buy steam games on steam either. Often a local store will sell you a steam game and just give you the steam serial key to punch into steam.
Steam has 99.9% of games today in its catalogue. Its the google or Facebook of the gaming world.
The other huge advantage is that you cab backup, redownload or reinstall games any time you like unlimited times. So no finding discs or patches. Its all automatic. No worrying your friend has different files or versions when playing multiplayer. So convienient.

il2 bos recently moved to steam and annoyed all of the pre-order guys who would have wanted steam instead of dodgy third party download or client installs. It has to be something rather special to get me to pollute my pc with yet another game client. Il2 bos evevtually allowed all their pre order customers to convert to steam.

I have used steam in the past for some games but don't now. Seeing as this game's value is in community mods, steam would not help us for that.

Just like Facebook and Google are very popular but have people who dislike or avoid them, there are gamers who don't use steam.

If a steam release is there for those who want it that would be great, but the game shouldn't be available ONLY via steam.

    Nobody said steam only.

And yes, steam now has workshop, modders upload their mods to steam, you just click one button and the mod is downloaded and installed right away not only that, but any update to the mod is automatically downloaded and installed. So i would say steam would be great help to this game.

    Please, no Steam!

In the unlucky case the Waterloo game development will be abandonded in the future, we can at least do some exe-patching (perhaps).

Bypassing the control threads of Steam is just an insane amount of work.

Steam does not stop community patches. When it was new and nobody knew what they were doing and steam was a little more primitive sure. Things change and the PC community has moved on. Take total war mods for example.

Correct. There are always people afraid of change. But sometimes a little push is needed for peoples and the games own good.

i have used steam since it first came out and i was not a fan. in the beginning it was as buggy as hell and intrusive. now it seems to behave itself for the most part. the problem with it is, if you have slow internet connectivity it can still be a giant pain. if the game is not a steam exclusive i belive it would be better. a choice is always preferable.

The workshop is unbelievably bad though.

It's hands down one of the worst mod managers I've encountered. And I used SIX Updater for crying out loud.

Hell, JSGME is the superior choice all of the time.

I don't much care if there is a Steam version but I won't be using it.

kg_sspoom is correct - Matrix are our distributors, so it will be a Matrix release initially. We have not given up on a Waterloo release on STEAM, or for the legacy games. Non steam-purchased games can be added to STEAM very easily, I do it with quite a few of mine.

i wouldnt dream of demanding anything by way of distribution. but if you can give the customer a choice i.e steam or not steam, that would be preferable.

    Thank You Sir!

For those that are demanding that SOWWL be released via Steam aren't thinking through this. Why would Matrix Games share their profits off SOWWL sales when the game is selling well already through Matrix? Of course, we at NSD are also hoping for this, the success of the game that is, and thus keeping a better profit margin for us also. :)

Sure, it's better to offer the customer more options for purchase, and this is the plan, EVENTUALLY, with Steam being the first 3rd party option.

Personally, Steam would never be an option of purchase for me. I live in backwoods Arkansas, and although I do have a DSL connection, it tends to be slow and shaky much of the time. Like many rural folks, Steam gaming is prohibitive because it's downright useless. And like someone mentioned already, NSD strives to handle mods and mod distribution 'in-house', we don't even rely on 3rd party solutions which I understand to be buggy at best.

Bottom line, Matrix Games is our distributor, we are in their family, and all decisions of distribution rest completely with them.

Any profits steam takes is easly made back but letting millions of potential customers see the game they would never see otherwise. There is a reason tiny indy devs, one man games, work very very hard to get their game on steam.

Also many od the youtube reviewers( some with sevral million viewers i might add), almost never review indy games not on steam.

Angry joe got like 2 million subscriber. And he has said many times he loves 18/19th century warfare. I gad posted on his forum about this game, if he sees that post i do not know. But i think chances of him reviewing the game is much higher if the game is on steam.

Have no idea how big matrix customer pool is. Maybe they feel its big enough to make enough money with out steam.

But it will probebly never be a run away success that the game deserves unless it's on steam.

And I've never said steam only. I will by the game no mater what, this is simply me wanting the game to be a big success.

mods even work on steam without the workshop. That's no problem either. But I have had no problems with it for new maps and mods for total war and company of heroes I have used it for.

I fully expect that someday the game will be available on Steam. I doubt any time soon as there are other things we are working on and some of the things we do will causes issues with a steam release. But I use Steam myself and would love to see our games on there someday.

Ummm last releases in Matrix/Slitherine try move to Steam or at same time with release or later... i dont find here a great problem in the moment they can do like in other matrix games and give owners a steam key to activate game in steam.

Seems like a good idea to me. Should give nice exposure to a lot of folks who would never know of this type of game. Won't be everyone's cup of tea and there will probably be some ignorant comments on steam about graphics and difficulty, but not everyone who uses steam is a dimwitted knuckledragger...maybe you can add goatpolean or I am breadbiscuit mods for those types...
